Success Stories

Westpac New Zealand

1

Richard Jarrett, Deputy CIO

We engaged Doug Maarschalk to conduct an external assessment of our culture and help further develop our culture strategy. This involved supporting our Enterprise Agile Coaches to provide practical steps to develop mindsets and behaviours for high performing teams. He also presented at our internal training seminars this year on how leaders can foster an environment of purpose, mastery and autonomy.

Doug brought clarity within the complex and dynamic nature of our environment. He related well and quickly earned the trust of the leaders and teams he engaged with.

Andrew Goodin, Global Manager Information Services

I was looking to develop and grow our IS Leadership Team. Enabling them to become better leaders to reach our aspirations.

One of our HR team recommended Doug to us. I resonated with the Intrinsic Motivation Framework of Purpose, Mastery and Autonomy. Doug facilitated a session on this as part of a Strategy Day. Following that we engaged Doug in a six-month program where he delivered content based on Intrinsic Motivation to build our leadership capability.

It’s an ongoing journey for our team. The impact we’ve seen so far is that the team is asking better questions. We’ve seen evidence of a growth mindset where team members approach challenges as opportunities.

Karen Aspey, People & Capability Manager

One of my team members recommended I meet with Doug as our People and Capability team embarked on redeveloping our performance development framework. I quickly came to value Doug’s thought leadership in intrinsic motivation as a foundation for performance.

In a collaborative way, he advanced our knowledge and challenged our thinking. Providing an external sounding board as we looked to implement something new in our organisation.  He adapted his area of expertise well to our situation. He was willing to work with our team to tailor a suitable approach rather than offering something ‘off-the-shelf’.

Manuel Efraimo, General Manager Operations & Service

Doug contacted us whilst in the middle of a department restructure, so the timing was perfect.  I felt that some new skills and ways of thinking would be valuable for me and my managers during this restructure and also to enable me to help develop my team during this change. Doug’s approach was to start small initially with a group session and then transition into one-on-one coaching. Other members of the executive team also saw the benefits and took the opportunity to be involved.

I found Doug calm and relatable. He was very easy to talk to about the strategic and management challenges of the business. His knowledge of these concepts, and ability to teach so I could easily apply them, gave me confidence that working with him would bring a positive impact not only professionally but personally.

Tim Vaughan, Head of ANZ at Education Perfect

We brought in Doug to run a Culture Strategy Workshop with our Executive Team because we saw an opportunity to bring our teams together around a common mission and vision. The workshop enabled us to think through our current state of play, the wider opportunities, and how we start to make progress on this journey. Doug was fantastic to work with and we appreciated his pragmatic approach. The experience was valuable because it’s provided clarity on what we needed to do next, generated momentum with a series of initiatives, and ultimately drove performance across our organisation.

Tim Bird, General Manager

I know that saying people are our greatest asset has become a cliché, but as a professional services firm it is absolutely the case. Having seen Dan Pink’s convincing TED talk and animation, followed by reading his book, Drive, on what really motivates people, I was keen to put his findings to work within my organisation.

Building, engaging and retaining a great team was the aim: an engaged team will deliver customer satisfaction with minimum direction; a retained team learns to work together well and makes financial sense – at least that was, and still is, the thinking!

Chris Cunniffe, CEO

Having worked as an employee of TMNZ for several years Doug is a familiar face around our office. We have been delighted to continue the relationship with Doug as a client of Sunergeo.

Doug brought my attention to the Principles of Intrinsic Motivation when we had the discussion about him running Workshops on the side of his day-to-day job. He is passionate about this field and how the lens of purpose, mastery and autonomy can be effectively used in our organisation to guide our culture. The concepts of ‘Intrinsic Motivation’ resonated with me immediately.
